A fire broke out this morning at Henri Coanda Airport in Bucharest. Some of the people affected by the incident were residents of Ruse waiting to catch their international flights. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, however it caused a number of delays.

The fire broke out at about 7am at Burger King, which is located very near some of the gates. As the Dutchman Jan Kopрelmans, travelling from Bucharest to Amsterdam informed Ruse Media, several firefighting teams arrived at the airport and quickly contained the fire.

The main problem for the passengers, however, seemed to be the thick suffocating smoke as most of the burning materials were plastic. The passengers, among whom was the renowned pianist from Ruse, Nikolay Dimitrov, were evacuated to an area of underground tunnels which had a ventilation system.

“The smoke and the smell were suffocating and as the fire was near the first gates, our way back to the waiting lounge was cut. There was no panic but the people were quite worried. Security and passport checks ceased as there was a great number of people and the place was overcrowded,” Nikolay Dimitrov told Ruse Media.

Within about an hour the situation was back to normal and passengers were allowed inside the airport. The firefighters remained at the site for some time for security reasons. Flights were resumed, but with  30-40 minutes delays.
